Arizona State University’s Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science, along with partners from Planet, the Coral Reef Alliance, the University of Queensland, and Vulcan Inc. are working to expand the Allen Coral Atlas. With the Atlas, coral conservationists, reef managers and scientists have access to high quality information that has never before been available at this global scale.
Arizona State University’s Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science (GDCS) is dedicated to generating innovative scientific discoveries and outcomes that benefit environmental conservation, resource management, and policy efforts. The center’s expert team, in close collaboration with other ASU units as well as government and non-government organizations, leads in spatially-explicit scientific and technological research focused on mitigating and adapting to global environmental change.
As lead of the Allen Coral Atlas partnership, the GDCS team is responsible for strategy and future innovation, web engineering, and data management, as well as technical innovations such as calculating ocean depth and benthic reflectance, and building the first-of-its-kind coral reef monitoring and alert system capable of detecting changes such as hot-water bleaching and destruction caused by coastal development.
The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) is focused on saving the world’s coral reefs. Their worldwide team works at local, regional, and global levels to keep coral reefs healthy, so they can survive for generations to come. As one of the largest global NGOs focused exclusively on coral reefs, CORAL has used cutting-edge science and community engagement for nearly 30 years to reduce direct threats to reefs and to promote scalable and effective solutions for their protection.

As a part of the Allen Coral Atlas project, Dr. Chris Roelfsema and Prof. Stuart Phinn lead their team in two main components: 1) acquiring new and existing verification data and 2) creating benthic and geomorphic maps of the world’s coral reefs. The mission of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. In the Caribbean, TNC is working to create healthy, resilient islands by protecting the ocean and coasts, safeguarding against the impacts of climate change and conserving and restoring coral reefs.
Drs. Joseph Pollock and Steve Schill and their team are developing a first-of-its-kind high-resolution habitat map of nearshore marine environments throughout the entire Caribbean basin. Importantly, TNC and partners are also putting this map to use for on-the-ground conservation action to more effectively conserve and restore coral reefs across the Caribbean.
WCS stands for wildlife and wild places and leads conservation programs spanning the entire ocean and more than 3 million biologically critical square miles in over 50 countries. WCS runs the world’s largest conservation field program, protecting more than 50 percent of Earth’s known biodiversity; in partnership with governments, Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities, and the private sector.
The Coral Reef Rescue Initiative presents a rescue strategy to conserve the world’s rapidly deteriorating tropical coral reefs. The initiative will focus on protecting those reefs that have the greatest potential to survive in a warming ocean and to act as source reefs from which corals can regenerate in the future. In particular, that means supporting the handful of developing countries where most climate-resilient reefs are found, and especially the human communities on the front-line.
The Initiative is led by WWF, in partnership with WCS, Rare, CARE, Blue Ventures, University of Queensland, the Government of Fiji, Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and Vulcan Inc.
Carol Phua is WWF’s Global Coral Reef Initiative Manager and Global MPA Lead, and works closely with partners to develop and lead implementation efforts. Working closely with the Allen Coral Atlas Team, the Initiative will use the Atlas in an ambitious landscape and seascape planning process with local governments and coastal communities.
To help address the coral crisis, Vulcan convened Planet, Carnegie Science, Dr. Ruth Gates of the University of Hawaii, and the University of Queensland to develop the idea for and build the world’s first high resolution global mosaic of coral reefs. These founding partners played an instrumental role in designing, planning, and launching the Allen Coral Atlas’s initial 5 mapped sites in fall 2018.

Formerly directed by renowned coral reef scientist and conservationist Ruth Gates, the Institute’s mission is to conduct multi-disciplinary research and education into all aspects of tropical marine biology. Following Dr. Gates’ unfortunate passing, HIMB continues to be a world leader in research to understand and conserve tropical marine ecosystems, and develops and implements new technologies that advance the informed stewardship of Hawaiʻi's marine and coastal biodiversity. Ruth Gates helped to conceive the Allen Coral Atlas as a wide partnership in service of scientists, conservationists, and local communities worldwide striving to save coral reefs, and the Atlas team are proud for this to be part of her legacy.
