Dr. Greg Asner
Founded by Andrew Carnegie to be a home for exceptional individuals, the Carnegie Institution for Science employs men and women with imagination and extraordinary dedication, who are capable of working at the cutting edge of their fields.
Today, Carnegie investigators pursue the answers to big questions in space, Earth, and life sciences at six research departments in the U.S., at Carnegie's observatories in Chile, and at fieldwork sites around the globe.
As part of the Allen Coral Atlas project, Carnegie scientist Greg Asner and his team are responsible for calculating ocean depth and benthic reflectance, as well as building a first-of-its-kind coral reef monitoring and alert system capable of detecting changes such as hot-water bleaching and destruction caused by coastal development.

As a part of the Allen Coral Atlas project, UQ will lead the charge in creating benthic and geomorphic maps of the world’s coral reefs. These maps are crucial to conservationists in identifying the reef composition and will be used for planning and managing marine protected areas.

The Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) is an independent research unit within the School of Ocean Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Formerly directed by renowned coral reef scientist and conservationist Ruth Gates, the Institute’s mission is to conduct multi-disciplinary research and education into all aspects of tropical marine biology.
Following Dr. Gates’ untimely death, HIMB continues to be a world leader in research to understand and conserve tropical marine ecosystems, and develops and implements new technologies that advance the informed stewardship of Hawaiʻi's marine and coastal biodiversity.
Ruth Gates helped to conceive the Allen Coral Atlas as a wide partnership in service of scientists, conservationists, and local communities worldwide striving to save coral reefs, and the Atlas team are proud for this to be part of her legacy.
